In 1930s Chicago, Frankenstein enlists Dr. Euphronius to help create a companion. They bring a murdered woman to life as the Bride, sparking romance, police interest, and radical social change. In January 2024, while hosting the Governors‘ Awards (the honorary awards/lifetime achievement awards given by the same Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences that hands out the Oscars), comedian John Mulaney jokingly told a story about how he was asked to audition for a small role in this film: „Ladies and gentlemen, you’re looking at me and thinking, ‚Oh, great. Another damn stand-up comedian here to mock our sacred rituals.‘ Well, I’ll tell you, I’m not that much of an outsider. I’m quite in demand in the film world. I’d like to share with you a real email I received from my agents about thirty days ago. This is an actual email that was sent to me on December 7th [2023], so you get an idea of who you’re dealing with. ‚John, in anticipation of our conversation, attached, see the untitled Maggie Gyllenhaal project, written and directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal.‘ That makes sense. ‚Emma Tillinger Koskoff, Osnat Handelsman [-Keren], and Talia Kleinhendler are attached to produce for Warner Brothers. Christian Bale is in talks to star opposite Jesse Buckley.‘ I know who one of those people is. ‚There’s no script available at this time.‘ Okay, I’m listening. ‚Waiting, waiting for your response to the material. Please use the attached pages to sign up for the role of a young cop.‘ Let me, thank you. They actually sent me that. WME [entertainment agency William Morris Endeavor] sent me this, let me be clear. I’m not OFFERING a young cop. They’re giving me a chance to throw my hat in the ring. And yes, I got on tape and, no, I didn’t get it, but . . . Let’s stop focusing on the failure, shall we?
